Chawathil First Nation Active Transportation Plan (2024)
Chawathil First Nation developed an Active Transportation Network Plan (ATNP) for Chawathil 4 and Schkam 2 in 2024. The Plan supports the implementation of an active transportation network that is accessible, safe and comfortable for all community members.
Several projects were identified through the development of the ATNP to improve active transportation in Chawathil 4 and Schkam 2. These include the following priority projects that are currently underway:

How Has the Community Been Engaged?
The Chawathil First Nation Active Transportation Network Plan was developed with input from Chief and Council, Nation members, and advisory groups. The engagement process for the plan began in February 2024 and concluded with the adoption of the final document by Chief and Council on July 2, 2024. Input was gathered through a variety of methods including:
1 community survey
2 community open houses
2 meetings with community Elders
2 meetings with Chief and Council
4 meetings with advisory groups and project partners (Land Advisory Committee, Ministry of Transportation and Transit, Fraser Valley Regional District, CP Rail)
Projects
Hope & Health Pathway: Schkam Segment
Named by Nation members through a community survey, the Hope & Health Pathway represents a commitment to provide safe and accessible routes for all residents, especially those without motor vehicles.
Coast to Canyon Trail Feasibility Study
A long-term active transportation connection between Chawathil community lands was identified in the Chawathil First Nation Active Transportation Network Plan in 2024.
Chawathil 4 Creek Restoration Trail
Current restoration initiatives for the creek at Chawathil 4 present an opportunity to develop a new trail that enhances recreational access for community members.
Chawathil 4 Enbridge Pipeline Right-of-Way Trail
A trail along the right-of-way for the Enbridge pipeline was identified as a priority project in Chawathil First Nation’s Active Transportation Network Plan in 2024. This dedicated right-of-way cannot be used for any other purpose and limits new development in Chawathil 4.
Schkam 2 Pedestrian Highway Overpass
A crossing improvement at Highway 1 was identified as a priority project in Chawathil First Nation’s Active Transportation Network Plan in 2024 and has been a priority of the Council since the year 2000.
