Project: Coast to Canyon Trail Feasibility Study

What is this Project?

The Coast to Canyon Trail is a proposed pathway along Highway 7. A long-term active transportation connection between Chawathil community lands was identified in the Chawathil First Nation Active Transportation Network Plan in 2024. This connection would offer a safer alternative to Highway 7 and Highway 1 for travel between community destinations.

The successful implementation of this project requires collaboration between several project partners including neighbouring First Nation communities like Seabird, Skawahlook and Yale, the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD), Ministry of Transportation and Transit (MOTT), CP Rail and the District of Hope.

How Has the Community Been Engaged?

The Coast to Canyon Trail was identified as a priority project to improve active transportation between Chawathil reserve lands. The project received support from Chief and Council, Nation members, and advisory groups as part of the engagement process for the Active Transportation Network Plan.

A community open house was held on February 4, 2025, with over 100 members in attendance, to engage Nation members on the Coast to Canyon Trail, among other projects. Nation members were provided with resources and asked to share feedback, questions and concerns related to the project.

What is the Project’s Expected Timeline?

A planning study to review the feasibility of implementing a trail along the south side of Highway 7 is currently underway. This feasibility study has been partially funded by Trans Canada Trail.
