Working Together - As One
Project: Hope & Health Pathway: Schkam Segment
What is this Project?
The Hope & Health Pathway is a multi-use pathway project in Schkam 2 along Ross Road. It was identified as a priority project through the development of the Chawathil First Nation Active Transportation Network Plan in 2024. The pathway will address concerns related to traffic speeds, impaired driving, and the need for dedicated active transportation infrastructure in Schkam 2.
Named by Nation members through a community survey, the Hope & Health Pathway represents a commitment to provide safe and accessible routes for all residents, especially those without motor vehicles. In the long term, the goal is to extend this pathway to connect to Chawathil First Nation reserve land (Chawathil 4), fostering a healthier and more connected community.
Chawathil First Nation has secured funding for the design and construction of the pathway through a federal government grant of $1.1 million.
How Has the Community Been Engaged?
The Hope & Health Pathway was identified as a priority project to improve active transportation on Chawathil reserve lands. The project received support from Chief and Council, Nation members, and advisory groups as part of the engagement process for the Active Transportation Network Plan.
‘Door to door’ engagement was conducted on January 29th, 2025, at Schkam to raise awareness and gain resident feedback regarding the pathway. A community open house was held on February 4, 2025, to engage Nation members on the Hope & Health Pathway, among other projects. Nation members were provided with resources and asked to share feedback on key project features such as desired pathway width, surface type, separation treatment, and design.
What is the Project’s Expected Timeline?
The Hope & Health Pathway is currently in the design phase. Construction is expected to begin once other infrastructure projects (housing and sewer) on Schkam 2 have been completed. The pathway is expected to be completed by Spring 2026.
