Project: Schkam 2 Pedestrian Highway Overpass

What is this Project?

A crossing improvement at Highway 1 was identified as a priority project in Chawathil First Nation’s Active Transportation Network Plan in 2024 and has been a priority of the Council since the year 2000. Community members expressed a strong preference for an overpass to improve safety and connectivity for pedestrians.

Once complete, the overpass will connect to the multi-use pathway (Hope & Health Pathway) ensuring safe access to housing, daycare, the bus stop and other community destinations in Schkam 2.

How Has the Community Been Engaged?

The Pedestrian Highway Overpass was identified as a priority project to improve safety for pedestrians at Schkam 2. The project received support from Chief and Council, Nation members, and advisory groups as part of the engagement process for the Active Transportation Network Plan.

A community open house was held on February 4, 2025, to engage Nation members on the Pedestrian Highway Overpass, among other projects. Nation members were provided with resources and asked to share feedback, questions and concerns related to the project.

What is the Project’s Expected Timeline?

Chawathil First Nation is working to secure funding from the federal government to build the highway overpass. A grant application to conduct a feasibility study is underway.
