Working Together - As One
The Chawathil First Nation 5-Year Economic Development Plan is now complete — the first comprehensive plan ever created for our Nation to chart a path forward for growth and opportunity. This plan lays out the many economic and regional opportunities ahead of us, guided by the ideas and aspirations of our community members.
In developing this plan, we drew wisdom from other Nations who have led the way in Indigenous economic development. As Chief Clarence Louie of the Osoyoos Indian Band has said, “It is the economic horse that pulls the social cart.” This principle underpins our vision: strong economic foundations create the resources we need to support the well-being of our people.
The plan was shaped through broad engagement:
- Thorough research and analysis of regional plans and opportunities in the Hope area.
- 163 responses from Chawathil members through surveys on land use and economic development,
- 3 community open houses,
- a highest and best use study of our lands,
- multiple Chief and Council meetings, and
- over 15 interviews with partners and stakeholders.
This is a major accomplishment for our Nation and gives us a clear roadmap to continue building. The next steps include supporting our new Board of Directors for the Chawathil Economic Development Corporation as they begin implementing the plan, pursuing revenue sharing agreements with partners, and sharing the plan with community members and companies to begin forging new partnerships.
Our goal is clear: to ensure Chawathil members have the careers and opportunities they want, to bring home strong incomes for their families, and to build a thriving future for our community.
Respectfully,
Chief Aaron Pete
Chawathil First Nation
