Where is this Project taking place?
The proposed housing project will be constructed at Schkam IR2 at the end of Ross Road.
What is being constructed?
In 2024, Chawathil First Nation was successful in an application to BC Housing to construct 31 new affordable homes. The homes will be a townhouse style building form.
When will the housing be built?
Construction is scheduled to begin Spring 2026. Once construction begins, regular updates will be provided to members on construction progress on the website, the community app, and the newsletter. The Construction Manager’s contact information will also be posted on site to respond to community questions or issues.
How many homes are being constructed? What type of units are they?
31 homes are being construction across four buildings. The unit mix is as follows:

Are any of the units accessible?
All two-bedroom units in the Elders Lodge are designed to be fully accessible.
Who is building the Housing?
Chawathil First Nation has hired Mierau Contractors to build the Housing. Mierau has a long history of building this type of housing with BC Housing and with other Nations.
Who is operating the housing?
Chawathil is partnering with Fraser-East Affordable Housing Society, a local non-profit housing operator based in Hope, to manage and operate the new housing project. Fraser-East has experience operating BC Housing projects and is looking forward to working in partnership with Chawathil to operate the new housing.

How do I apply to live here?
Once Construction is underway, more information regarding the application process will be available. If you are interested in living here, please check back here regularly.
How much is rent?
Rent will be based on the individual’s income and set at no more that 30% of that income. Additional details regarding rent and eligibility will be available closer to construction start.
How has the Community been involved in the process?
The Community has been engaged in the process since early 2023 including through a Housing Forum, key informant interviews and discussions, meetings with Chief and Council, member surveys and open houses. A summary of the engagement was prepared by Chawathil First Nation.
General Housing Information
The CFN Housing department manages all Nation-owned rental properties, supports members with homes on reserve, and coordinates with the Public Works department for repairs and maintenance, acting as a bridge between renters/owners and the necessary services.
Chawathil Housing department works to provide healthy, safe, sustainable housing for the members. Chawathil housing department has 2 staff members and a housing committee to assist with administering the Housing Policy.
As of the end of 2024, Chawathil has fully repaired more than 30 of its 89 homes, and is working to repair the remainder. Further, Chawathil is actively seeking to bring new housing to the community. The Housing Department strives to provide safe and sustainable housing for Chawathil Members.
Chawathil’s Housing Department is working to:
- Assist in Community planning and development in new residential housing construction, home renovations for rentals, social housing and privately owned residences.
- Access funding programs to benefit both Chawathil housing programs and on-reserve privately owned residences.
- Implement an efficient maintenance program to meet annual needs within budgetary constraints.

Frequent Questions
When is a repair an emergency?
A repair is considered an emergency if it poses an immediate risk to health, safety, or property. Examples include severe water leaks, electrical issues, gas leaks, or any situation that makes the home uninhabitable.
Should I submit a Maintenance Work Order or a Housing Repair Request?
Submit a housing repair request for issues within your living unit, such as a broken appliance or plumbing problem. Use a maintenance work order for broader property maintenance needs, like issues in common areas or exterior maintenance.
How do I pay my rent with e-transfer?
To pay your rent with e-transfer, log into your online banking, select the e-transfer option, and send the payment to the designated email address provided by the housing office. Include your name and address in the message section for reference. You can use our form to provide us with additional confirmation.
How do I submit a noise complaint?
To submit a noise complaint, fill out the Noise Complaint form on our website. Include details such as the nature of the noise, the time and date of the incident, and the location of the noise source.
What types of housing are available?
We offer various types of housing depending on availability, including single-family homes, apartments, townhouses, duplexes, studios, senior housing and accessible housing. You can specify your preference in the Renting Inquiry form.
What should I do if I encounter debris on the property?
If you encounter debris on the property, fill out the Debris form on our website. Provide a description of the debris, its location, and any photos if possible.
Does CFN Housing repair and replace appliances?
The Housing Department repairs or replaces appliances for homes in phase 10, 11, or 12. For anyone not in an active phase and on social assistance, a letter can be written to the CFN Social Development Department.
