LANGUAGE & CULTURE
Chawathil First Nation prioritizes the preservation and revitalization of its cultural heritage and the halq’emeylem language.
Halq̓eméylem is the traditional language of the Chawathil First Nation, which is within the Sto:lo territory.
After the residential school era, our language was almost extinct. After years of relearning, more and more Chawathil members are learning and bringing our language back.
The Wellness, Culture and Language department offers a variety of ongoing programs such as:
- Traditional medicines
- Beading
- Crafts
- Drum making
- Canning
- Canoe journeys
- Traditional singing and dancing
- Seasonal cultural activities and events
Facilities include a Cultural Centre and land-based components within the Chawathil territory.
